The Arithmetiquities

Cartoon of the heroes from the Arithmetiquities
Jason is the curator of the Arithmetiquities, a mathematical fantasy adventure in which a quirky band of heroes undertakes a quest to recover a collection of powerful mathemagical artifacts.

The twist is that this tale unfolds through a sequence of mathematical story problems! Each chapter in the story is a puzzling "problem of the week", and the 36 serialized chapters weave the story over the span an entire school year.
I'm always looking forward to the next chapter. Even though it's challenging, it makes me think outside the box.

I've been very impressed with the rich discussion that's taken place (particularly when they disagree with one another) whilst they try to solve the problems.

The Quests of Epic Proportions

Collage of adventure supplies: torch, compass, canteen, and rope
Jason is the author of the Quests of Epic Proportions, a cooperative game built with social-emotional learning (SEL) in mind. The fictional challenges of the game are engaging and fun, while presenting "real enough" situations that deep SEL conversations can arise.

Young people who participate in a Quest encounter opportunities to work on skills such as:
  • active listening
  • perspective-taking
  • being assertive
  • sharing the spotlight
  • disagreeing agreeably
  • tolerating ambiguity and frustration

Teacher facilitators receive printable game materials and online access to a collection of "choose your own adventure" stories.

The funny thing is that [my students] have not even caught on to this being SEL. They are stating sentences like, "Our group is using active listening, and it works." "I feel like our group overpowers people's opinions. How can we change that?"
